Metabolomics analyzes simultaneously thousands of endogenous compounds present in biofluids (metabolites) to produce a precise image of the physiological state of a cell or organism in a given moment.
The metabolome comprises different varieties of compounds such as lipids, sugars, steroids or nucleotides, all defined as metabolites. These are intermediates or final products of enzymatic transformations creating a net of pathways responsible for processes such as storage or production of energy, biosynthesis, or degradation of biological substances.
The concentration of each metabolite is rigorously regulated by the organism to maintain a dynamic equilibrium defined as homeostasis. Many diseases and disorders entail metabolic changes or are a consequence of a homeostatic unbalance. Metabolomics tries to detect those changes by determining the metabolites whose concentration has been altered.
Complex matrices such as urine or blood contain components -proteins, salts or entire cells- that interfere in the precise identification and quantification of many different metabolites. Advanced techniques are required in the sample preparation, the metabolites’ separation and identification, and the posterior analysis of the generated information.
MDRenal works toward the development of a complete bioanalytical system based in proprietary technology that will render mass spectrometry-based metabolomics more precise and accessible than ever. Our products will facilitate the improvement of methodologies and the achievement of results in a more efficient manner.
